SPORTS MASSAGE THERAPY

There are many benefits to Sports Massage Therapy. The horse's muscles represent around 45-50% of their total body mass, accounting for about 700 muscles. They not only power movement, but they also absorb shock and distribute forces throughout the body.

When stress or an injury is present, the muscle contracts to protect that area, reducing blood flow to it. This hyper-contraction leads to other muscles having to bear the strain. In other terms, the horse will compensate using other muscles, which can lead to soreness through the body and even lameness. Everything is connected, like a big chain, and treating muscles on a maintenance schedule can prevent future injury. Here are some added benefits:

  • Relieves tension

  • Improves blood circulation, which promotes even muscle growth and faster healing of injuries

  • Reduces inflammation and swelling in the joints

  • Increases range of motion and overall disposition and behavior

  • Prevents injury or lameness

  • Stimulates the lymphatic system, which in turn promotes elimination of waste and toxins

  • Eases muscle spasms

  • Prevents fibrosis

Equine Sports Massage Therapy is a very beneficial treatment for horses of all breeds and all disciplines.
